Top U.S. Trucking Metros by Carrier Base

Los Angeles has the largest metro carrier base in the country (17,000+ registered carriers), ahead of Dallas–Fort Worth (14,000+) and Chicago (13,500+). But by density — carriers per million residents — Memphis leads decisively at over 4,400, more than triple the Los Angeles rate, a direct reflection of the FedEx SuperHub feeder economy. The table ranks major U.S. freight metros by carrier base and adds a carriers-per-million-residents metric published nowhere else.

Density is the more useful signal for an owner-operator deciding where to base: a high carriers-per-million figure (Memphis, Salt Lake City, Indianapolis) means a deep local freight economy relative to population — but also more FMCSA new-entrant audit volume per capita. In every one of these metros, the BOC-3 process-agent designation is a routine first checkpoint in that audit.

Methodology: Carrier counts are FastBOC3 estimates derived from FMCSA registration data, rounded to the nearest hundred; metro populations are rounded approximations. Carriers-per-million-residents is derived from those two figures and is directional, not a precise per-capita statistic.
